Court Etiquette: Learn the Rules Before You Smash!

Pickleball court etiquette

If you're a beginner, one of the first things you need to learn (before you start smashing the ball around!) is the rules and etiquette of pickleball.

Pickleball is more than just a game—it’s about fun, respect, and building an inclusive community.

General Etiquette

  • Welcome newcomers
  • Introduce yourself
  • Encourage others
  • Keep noise to a minimum
  • Say “good game” and tap paddles after the game

Faults, Fair Play, and Game Flow

  • Call your own faults
  • Keep the game moving
  • Resolve disputes calmly

Basic Rules to Remember

Serving Rules:
  • Players are allowed only one serve attempt unless it’s a “let” serve.
  • Both feet must remain behind the baseline until the ball is struck.
The Two-Bounce Rule:
  • After the serve, each team must let the ball bounce once before hitting it.
Kitchen Rules:
  • Players cannot volley from within the no-volley zone (kitchen) or touch the line when volleying.
Line Calls:
  • Any ball that hits a line is considered in (except for the kitchen line during a serve).

Communication is Key

  • Call the score loudly and clearly
  • Announce “OUT” loudly
  • Respect the rotation system
